Jesus laid down a foundational truth in Luke 6:45 when He taught that “out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Your mouth is ultimately a barometer for what you actually believe. If you want to see your life align with God’s purposes, you have to ensure your mouth is speaking in line with His Word.
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [a]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” – Luke 6:45
Releasing Faith Through Your Words
Throughout the Gospels, we see that miraculous breakthroughs rarely just happened out of nowhere; they were actively spoken into existence by people releasing their faith. Tim and I dive into several powerful examples:
- The Woman with the Issue of Blood: Her healing wasn’t just a random physical touch. Mark 5 reveals that she actively said, “If only I may touch his clothes, I shall be made well.” She spoke it, believed it, acted on it, and her faith made her completely whole.
- Jairus and the Blind Men: When Jairus received devastating news about his daughter, Jesus instantly intercepted his fear, commanding him, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” Similarly, two blind men had their sight restored only after boldly declaring, “Yes, Lord,” when asked if they believed He could do it.
Jesus explicitly commands his disciples to “Have faith in God.” He explains that whoever commands a “mountain”—representing any massive problem, sickness, or obstacle in your way—to be removed, and does not doubt in their heart but believes what they say will happen, they will have whatever they say.
This isn’t a passive wish; it is an active, speaking faith. This is the exact blueprint of heaven. God did not just think the universe into existence; He spoke it into being with words joined to perfect faith.
Learning from Old Testament Reports
We can look directly at the Old Testament to see the stark contrast between fear-filled words and faith-filled confessions:
- The Ten Spies vs. Caleb & Joshua: In Numbers 13 and 14, ten spies filled an entire nation’s hearts with doubt, resulting in an entire generation wandering and dying in the wilderness. But Caleb and Joshua focused entirely on God’s ability, declaring, “We are well able to overcome it!” Because of their faith-filled report, they were the only ones of their generation to step into the Promised Land.
- David Facing Goliath: David didn’t quietly slip into battle; he boldly confessed aloud exactly how God was going to deliver the giant into his hands before he ever threw a stone.
The Practical Takeaway
Because you are made in the very image of God, your words carry weight. This isn’t about some superficial, mind-over-matter repetition; it is about cultivating a deep, unshakeable conviction rooted in scripture. We must guard our mouths diligently—choosing to speak faith, hope, and victory rather than agreeing with the enemy’s narrative of defeat.
