Scripture lays this reality down plainly in Proverbs 18:21—death and life are held entirely in the power of the tongue. Your words are never neutral. Combined with the faith in your heart, your spoken words possess the literal kingdom potential to release miraculous breakthroughs or block what God wants to do in your life.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21
Have the Faith of God
When Jesus instructs His disciples in Mark 11:22 to “Have faith in God,” the original Greek text actually translates to something incredible: “Have the faith of God.”
“So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.” — Mark 11:22
This is the exact way God operated all the way back in Genesis. He did not merely think about creation; He boldly spoke light and life into existence out of total darkness. His words carried His creative power because they were perfectly joined to His unshakeable belief. As a believer made in the image of God, you are designed to operate using that exact same blueprint.
Jesus explicitly outlines the mechanics of how this works in the very next verse:
“Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.” — Mark 11:23
Notice that the breakthrough doesn’t happen just because you think it or pray about it—you have to say it. The “mountain” represents any massive obstacle standing in your path—whether it is deep debt, chronic sickness, or broken relationships. It requires your actual, spoken words working in direct alignment with your internal faith to see a supernatural turnaround.
Aligning Your Daily Speech with the Word
Throughout the Bible, we see this pattern clearly. Before David ever threw a smooth stone at Goliath, he boldly confessed aloud to the entire army exactly how God was going to deliver the giant into his hands. He believed it in his heart, and he declared it with his mouth.
On the flip side, James warns us about the destructive potential of an unbridled tongue:
“Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” – James 3:5-6
James explains that the tongue acts like a tiny rudder that steers a massive ship. Your words are a powerful force that will either release the power of faith and bring God’s blessings into your life, or release doubt and fear, hindering the work God wants to perform through you.
If you want to see God move mightily, you have to break the habit of complaining and stop agreeing with the enemy’s narrative. Tim and I break down three simple steps to align your speech with God’s Word:
- Find the Promise: Search out scriptures that cover your specific situation (like physical healing in 1 Peter 2:24 or financial provision in Philippians 4:19).
- Write It Down: Anchor the truth in your mind so you aren’t swept away by emotion when a trial hits.
- Declare It Boldly: Speak the promise out loud over your life with deep conviction.
If you stumble and speak words of doubt, don’t get discouraged. Quickly repent, realign your thoughts with God’s truth, and start speaking life again. You can have what you say—so choose today to speak faith!
